Actor Emraan Hashmi’s Awarapan 2 is continuing its strong run at the box office, with the film inching closer to the Rs 100-crore mark in India and Rs 150-crore mark globally. After opening on a high note, the sequel has maintained a steady pace through the extended Independence Day weekend and has now emerged as a clear winner in its box-office clash with Batwara 1947.
According to early estimates by trade website Sacnilk, Awarapan 2 opened with Rs 22 crore on Friday. The film witnessed a sharp 55 per cent jump on Saturday, collecting Rs 33.75 crore. The growth was aided by the Independence Day holiday as well as an increase in the number of shows, which went up from 9,033 on Friday to 10,496 on Saturday.
The film’s collections saw a dip on Sunday, when the number of shows also dropped to 9,403. Awarapan 2 collected Rs 26 crore on its first Sunday, followed by Rs 9.25 crore on Monday as the expected post-weekend decline kicked in.
| Day | Day | India Net Collection |
|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | 1st Friday | Rs 22.00 crore |
| Day 2 | 1st Saturday | Rs 33.75 crore |
| Day 3 | 1st Sunday | Rs 26.00 crore |
| Day 4 | 1st Monday | Rs 9.25 crore |
| Total | 4 days | Rs 91.00 crore |
With this, the film’s India nett collection stands at Rs 91 crore. It has also comfortably moved ahead of Sunny Deol’s Batwara 1947 at the domestic box office.
The Emraan Hashmi-starrer’s worldwide collections reached Rs 130.82 crore. Given the strong word-of-mouth and box office success, the film is expected to cross Rs 150-crore mark this week.
If Awarapan 2 maintains a similar pace on Tuesday, the film could cross the Rs 100-crore mark by the end of Day 5. Discounted ticket prices at several multiplexes on Tuesday could further boost footfalls and help the film reach the milestone.
The film’s performance is particularly notable given the theatrical run of the 2007 original. While Awarapan failed to make a major impact at the box office initially, its music and emotional appeal helped it develop a cult following over the years. Awarapan 2 surpassed the lifetime collection of the original on its opening day itself.
Reportedly made on a budget of Rs 45 crore, Awarapan 2 has already recovered twice its reported production cost in India net collections. With Rs 91 crore in the bag, the film has emerged as a hit and is delivering a strong return on investment.
Directed by Nitin Kakkar, Awarapan 2 stars Emraan Hashmi and Disha Patani in the lead roles.
