Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma announced the next instalment of his popular political crime franchise Sarkar. The director revealed that Sarkar 4 will soon go on floors, marking the return of one of his most acclaimed film series.
Speaking at the opening day of the Red Lorry Film Festival, Varma shared that the sequel is set to begin production very soon. “I am making Sarkar 4. I'm starting that next month,” he said while answering a question during the session.
The filmmaker also spoke briefly about another upcoming project titled The Syndicate, which he joked would “wash away all my sins.”
The original Sarkar, released in 2005, featured Amitabh Bachchan in the lead role as Subhash Nagre, a powerful political figure inspired by real-life power structures. Abhishek Bachchan played his on-screen son Shankar, and the film went on to become a critically acclaimed political drama.
The franchise expanded with its sequel, Sarkar Raj, which released in 2008 and introduced Aishwarya Rai Bachchan as Anita Rajan. Nearly a decade later, the third instalment, Sarkar 3, hit theatres in 2017. Along with Amitabh and Abhishek reprising their roles, the film also featured Yami Gautam, Manoj Bajpayee and Amit Sadh in key roles.
Varma was present at the Red Lorry Film Festival event for a special screening of his cult classic Shiva. Reflecting on the film, the director spoke about the creative influences behind it and how global cinema shaped his visual style.
“Certainly, some of the shots in Shiva were inspired by Spielberg's style of shot-taking,” RGV said, referring to legendary filmmaker Steven Spielberg.
He also noted that the film’s thematic inspiration came from The Way of the Dragon, starring martial arts icon Bruce Lee. According to Varma, he adapted the core premise of that film into an entirely different setting while making Shiva.
During the interaction, Varma also praised filmmaker Aditya Dhar and his upcoming project Dhurandhar 2, calling him one of the most promising talents of the current generation. He reiterated that Spielberg continues to remain his all-time favourite filmmaker.
