For many gamers, the original Xbox wasn't just a console; for them, it was the beginning of countless late-night gaming sessions, LAN parties, and iconic titles like Halo. Now, Microsoft is tapping into that nostalgia with a special edition Xbox Series X designed to celebrate 25 years of the Xbox brand. The first Xbox was launched in North America on November 15, 2001.
Yesterday, the company unveiled the Xbox Series X25 Limited Edition. It is a new version of the brand’s flagship console inspired by the design of the original Xbox. The special edition comes with a translucent green finish, a colour long associated with the first Xbox console. Microsoft says the design is meant to honour the history of Xbox while bringing it into the modern era with the power and performance of the Xbox Series X.
According to Jason Ronald, Microsoft's Vice President of Next Generation, this is the first time the company has introduced a translucent design for the Xbox Series X.
A nostalgia for the original Xbox
Design-wise, the special edition console features a translucent "OG Green" shell that allows users to glimpse some of the internal components. When powered on, the iconic "X" on the front lights up in green, serving as a nod to the startup animation of the original Xbox. Microsoft has also added a 25th Anniversary logo on the front and says fans will find a few hidden surprises throughout the design.
Alongside the console, Microsoft has announced the Xbox Wireless Controller X25 Special Edition. It follows the same translucent green theme and includes several callbacks to the original Xbox controller. The controller features the classic coloured ABXY buttons, while the bumpers pay tribute to the black and white buttons found on the original "Duke" controller. The transparent back casing and battery door reveal the classic Xbox logo underneath.
Availability and pricing
Microsoft says the Xbox Series X25 Limited Edition console and controller will be available in select markets starting in November this year. The controller will also be sold separately for players who want to add a piece of Xbox history to their setup without purchasing the console.
The company has not yet revealed pricing details or opened pre-orders, but says more information will be shared closer to launch. Microsoft also hinted that the anniversary console is only one part of its broader celebrations marking 25 years of Xbox.
