Indian among 12 killed in latest Russian strikes on Ukraine, says Zelenskyy

The overnight attacks, involving missiles and drones, marked the sixth consecutive day of Russian strikes on the Ukrainian capital.

An Indian citizen was among 12 people killed in Russian overnight air attacks on Ukraine's Kyiv and the surrounding region as the war intensified, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Tuesday.

Russian forces launched missiles and drones at Kyiv and the wider Kyiv region overnight, with explosions reported across the capital, marking the sixth consecutive day of strikes on the Ukrainian capital. Ukrainian authorities said residential buildings and other civilian infrastructure were damaged, while emergency crews responded to fires at several locations.

"A significant number of jet-powered drones and ballistic missiles were used in the attack. Unfortunately, residential buildings and civilian infrastructure have been damaged," Zelenskyy wrote on X, as he narrated the Russian attack aftermath.

"Overall, 12 people were killed, among them an Indian citizen, and dozens more were injured in the attack. My condolences to everyone who has lost family and loved ones," the Ukrainian leader said.

The attacks triggered air-raid alerts across much of Ukraine. In Kyiv, emergency services reported multiple fires following the strikes, while falling debris and direct impacts damaged buildings. In another city, Boryspil, missiles and drones damaged an apartment building and a business facility.

Zelenskyy alleged that Russia deliberately plans its strikes to inflict maximum destruction and loss of life, saying such attacks succeed when Ukraine’s air-defence capabilities are insufficient to intercept them.

The latest strikes come after days of sustained Russian aerial attacks. On Monday, Russian drone strikes had already disrupted transport and damaged warehouses, apartment buildings and commercial facilities around Kyiv. Zelenskyy had said Russia launched around 1,500 drones over a four-day period, highlighting the scale of the recent aerial campaign.

The attacks have also increasingly focused on Ukraine's energy, logistics and border infrastructure. Tuesday's strikes reportedly disrupted a border crossing with Romania at Orlivka on the Danube, according to news agency Reuters.
