Authorities in Bengaluru have begun towing away abandoned vehicles parked on streets and in public spaces after the end of a seven-day notice period.

The drive is being carried out jointly by the Greater Bengaluru Authority and the Traffic Police.

The action follows a special campaign launched on July 10, during which notices were affixed on abandoned vehicles, asking owners to remove them within seven days.

Officials said the move is aimed at clearing footpaths and public spaces, improving safety, and making it easier for people to move around the city.

The towing drive was launched on Saturday by Greater Bengaluru Development Minister Krishna Byre Gowda in Gandhi Nagar, under the jurisdiction of the Greater Bengaluru Authority's Central City Municipal Corporation.

Officials said a wheel clamp was also fitted to vehicles at the time the notice was affixed.

Vehicles that were not claimed and removed within the notice period are now being towed and seized by the joint operational authorities. Officials said all seized vehicles will be put up for public auction in line with statutory guidelines.

Last week, the Greater Bengaluru Authority and the Traffic Police had also issued a public notice on the removal and auction of abandoned vehicles from streets and public spaces.

According to the notice, the five City Corporations under the Greater Bengaluru Authority began the drive under Section 324 of the GBA Act, 2024.

With the seven-day period now over, the authorities have moved from issuing notices to towing and seizing abandoned vehicles as part of the wider effort to keep Bengaluru's streets, footpaths and public spaces free of obstruction.
