Two killed, suspect dead after shooting at Minneapolis apartment building

Two people were killed and the suspect died after a shooting at a downtown Minneapolis apartment building, while three police officers were injured.

Two people were killed, and the suspect died after a shooting at a downtown Minneapolis apartment building on Wednesday afternoon, according to police.

Three Minneapolis police officers were also injured in the shooting, police Sgt Garrett Parten said at a press conference Wednesday evening. Two officers suffered gunshot wounds. A hospital spokesperson said all three officers were in stable condition.

One victim died after being fatally shot at the scene, while the other died after arriving at Hennepin County Medical Center, Parten said.

The shooting initially left at least one person dead and six others injured, according to officials. The Minneapolis Police Department said two of its officers were among those wounded and warned the public to stay away from the area.

Police did not immediately say how many people had been shot, but Hennepin County Medical Centre said it received seven patients, including one who died. Officials did not immediately release additional information about the conditions of the other patients.

Julius Bailey was sitting outside his apartment building when he heard gunshots and saw a man he recognised as a resident of the building holding a pistol. Bailey said he heard a woman screaming and immediately ran away. He said he counted eight shots.

Bailey said he recognised the man holding the gun because the man was known for showing off his weapon. Bailey said he had tried to avoid the man since moving into the building in June.

“I could tell he was trouble,” Bailey said.

Chris Miller, who also lives in the apartment building, said he heard a rapid succession of gunshots and quickly ran outside for safety. He said he believed he knew who carried out the shooting and that he had encountered someone in the hallway with a handgun earlier this week and reported that person to management.

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz said in a social media post that state officials were on the ground helping local law enforcement respond to the shooting.

“Grateful to law enforcement actively working to ensure the safety of our neighbours in Downtown Minneapolis this afternoon,” Walz said. “Minnesota is praying for our first responders.”

FBI Director Kash Patel said in a post on the social platform X that the FBI was responding to the shooting and “will offer any and all resources necessary to assist local authorities.”

Minnesota House Speaker Lisa Demuth said she was praying for the victims of “this heinous crime.”

“I’m incredibly thankful for the massive response of our brave law enforcement officers,” she said in a social media post.

Video posted to social media showed police aiming rifles upward at an apartment tower near the Minneapolis Convention Center. Officials warned residents to avoid the densely populated Loring Park neighbourhood nearby.
