Batwara 1947 box office Day 3: Sunny Deol film wraps slow weekend, trails Border 2

Batwara 1947 ended its opening weekend at Rs 37.11 crore worldwide after a sharp Sunday fall. The drop widened its gap with Awarapan 2 and checked hopes of a stronger weekend finish.

In Short

  • Day 3 net collection stood at ₹7.25 crore across 7,239 shows
  • Independence Day helped the film surge nearly 135% on Saturday
  • Awarapan 2 stayed ahead in cinemas, crossing ₹110.10 crore worldwide

Sunny Deol’s Batwara 1947 got a sizeable Independence Day boost but could not sustain the momentum into Sunday. According to industry tracking site Sacnilk, the film closed its opening weekend with a worldwide gross of Rs 37.11 crore. Batwara’s three-day run now stands in stark contrast to the pace set by Deol’s Border 2 earlier this year, putting the pressure on the Partition drama to find stronger legs on weekdays.

Sacnilk reported that Batwara 1947 collected Rs 7.25 crore net in India on Day 3 (first Sunday), a sharp drop from the Rs 13.50 crore it earned on Saturday. Its India net total now stands at Rs 26.50 crore, while the India gross is Rs 31.61 crore. The film added Rs 2 crore from overseas markets on Sunday, taking its worldwide gross to Rs 37.11 crore.

Batwara 1947 had opened to Rs 5.75 crore net on Friday, before almost doubling its collections on Saturday. The Rs 13.50 crore haul came as the Independence Day holiday gave the film a significant boost. However, Sunday brought a sharp correction, with collections falling by around 46 per cent from Saturday, according to Sacnilk.

Batwara 1947 vs Border 2: The Sunny Deol comparison

The comparison with Border 2 is particularly telling. Both films feature Sunny Deol in patriotic dramas and arrived in theatres with considerable expectations, but their opening trajectories have been markedly different.

Border 2, the Sunny Deol-led war drama, had opened at around Rs 30 crore net and recorded a much stronger first Sunday, earning Rs 54.50 crore net on Day 3. By the end of the weekend (January 25), the film collected a total of Rs 158 crore gross.

The gap is even more striking when Day 3 is isolated: Border 2 earned Rs 54.50 crore net on its first Sunday, while Batwara 1947 managed Rs 7.25 crore.

Moreover, the film is also battling Emraan Hashmi’s Awarapan 2, which has emerged as the stronger performer of the two Independence Day releases. The sequel has raced ahead of Batwara 1947 at the box office and is nearing the Rs 100 crore mark in India and earning Rs 110 crore gross globally after its opening weekend.
