A Kashmiri man has accused Congress supporters of assaulting him in Delhi’s Connaught Place after he raised slogans in support of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The man, Faheem Nazir, submitted a complaint at the Connaught Place police station, following which police are conducting his medical examination and taking legal action, according to the information available.
Nazir claimed in his complaint that he had reached the Connaught Place area where Congress leaders and Opposition MPs had gathered for lunch on Thursday.
He said he expressed his support for Modi and raised slogans in his favour, following which Congress workers present at the spot assaulted him. The claims have not been independently verified.
Police are examining the complaint and are expected to register an FIR after completing the preliminary proceedings. Nazir has also said that he is a supporter of the Prime Minister and does not belong to any political organisation.
POLICE BEGINS PROBE
The incident comes amid protests by the Congress and other Opposition parties in Delhi demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
The Opposition has been protesting over its concerns regarding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and has intensified demonstrations in the national capital in recent days.
Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, have participated in the protests, with Opposition MPs and supporters attempting to march towards Jantar Mantar. Several leaders and protesters have been detained by Delhi Police during the demonstrations.
The latest complaint adds another incident to the tensions surrounding the ongoing protests, with police action and competing claims from protesters and authorities already becoming a major part of the political confrontation in Delhi.
