Rohit Sharma retained, Auqib Nabi picked in India's ODI squad for West Indies series

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will continue in India's ODI setup for the West Indies series, with Ravindra Jadeja making a return to the squad. Auqib Nabi and Naman Dhir have earned maiden ODI call-ups.

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have retained their places in India's 15-member ODI squad for the three-match series against West Indies, with KL Rahul named Shubman Gill's deputy. Rookie Punjab all-rounder Naman Dhir and Jammu and Kashmir seamer Auqib Nabi have earned maiden call-ups, while Hardik Pandya and Rishabh Pant have been left out for different reasons.

Gill will continue as captain for the series, which begins in Thiruvananthapuram on September 27. The second ODI will be played in Guwahati on September 30, with the third in New Chandigarh on October 3. Rohit's selection comes after weeks of discussion around his ODI future. The former India captain remains part of the side alongside Gill and Kohli after scoring a century in the third ODI against England at Lord's in July.

The squad has been affected by the overlap with the Asian Games in Japan. Several regular white-ball players will be involved with India's Asian Games campaign, leading the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee to make changes to the ODI squad.

HARDIK, PANT IGNORED; NITISH IN

Hardik has not been selected despite being scheduled to return to competitive cricket later this month. He has been picked for India A's three-match one-day series against Australia A in Puducherry, beginning October 6.

Hardik's return to competitive cricket is scheduled for September 20. However, the national selection panel will want him to demonstrate that he can bowl 10 overs before considering him for the ODI side. His ability to complete the workload required of an ODI all-rounder, including bowling 10 overs and fielding for 50 overs, will be assessed as part of his comeback.

India have limited options in the seam-bowling all-rounder role with Hardik unavailable. Suryansh Shedge and Venkatesh Iyer, who could also have been considered, are currently injured. Nitish Kumar Reddy has been withdrawn from India's Asian Games squad and added to the ODI side for the West Indies series. His inclusion gives India another seam-bowling all-round option in Hardik's absence.

Rishabh Pant has also been left out of the ODI squad. He will lead the Rest of India side in the Irani Cup against Ranji Trophy champions Jammu & Kashmir. Ravindra Jadeja has been recalled to the ODI side, adding experience to the squad as India deal with the absence of several players involved in the Asian Games.

NAMAN, AUQIB EARN ODI CALL-UPS

Naman Dhir has been included as an all-round option and will make his maiden appearance in India's senior ODI squad. His performances in domestic cricket for Punjab and in the IPL for Mumbai Indians have earned him a call-up.

Auqib Nabi has also received his first call-up to India's senior ODI side. The Jammu and Kashmir seamer has been rewarded for his performances for Surrey in the English county circuit and adds another pace option to the squad.

Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna and Gurnoor Brar are the other specialist fast bowlers. Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav are the two specialist spin options.

Ruturaj Gaikwad is expected to bat at No. 4 in the absence of Shreyas Iyer. Iyer will lead India's T20I side at the Asian Games.

Yashasvi Jaiswal has been selected as the reserve opener, while Dhruv Jurel is the second wicketkeeping option alongside Rahul.

The West Indies series will comprise three ODIs and five T20Is. The ODI leg begins in Thiruvananthapuram on September 27, followed by the second ODI in Guwahati on September 30 and the third in New Chandigarh on October 3.

The final ODI will be played on the same day as the medal matches at the Asian Games.

The T20I side will be led by Shreyas Iyer, with Tilak Varma as vice-captain. The squad will largely comprise players involved in India's Asian Games campaign, with Mayank Yadav and Prince Yadav coming in place of Yash Thakur and Vipraj Nigam.

The five-match T20I series against West Indies will begin in Lucknow on October 6. The remaining matches are scheduled for Ranchi on October 9, Indore on October 11, Hyderabad on October 14 and Bengaluru on October 17.
