A major burglary left a prominent businessman in Valapattanam in Kannur district of Kerala devastated, as a gang of robbers made off with Rs 1 crore in cash and 300 sovereigns of gold. The theft, which took place while the family was away, came to light when the family returned home on Sunday night.
They left for Madurai in Tamil Nadu to attend a wedding ceremony on November 19, and discovered the crime upon their return. Police sources confirmed that the valuables, which had been locked in a cupboard, were missing, with the key to the cupboard stored in another room.
The burglars were believed to have gained entry by cutting the grill of the kitchen window. CCTV footage from the area showed three individuals scaling the compound wall and entering the house. Police were trying to identify the suspects and piece together the details of the crime.
A relative of the family spoke to the media, describing how the money, gold, and other valuables were securely locked away in the cupboard, further raising suspicions of premeditated theft by the burglars.
Police teams, including fingerprint experts, were quickly dispatched to the scene to collect evidence. A widespread search was launched across the district as authorities intensified efforts to track down the criminals responsible.
