The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Thursday refused to confirm or deny a potential meeting between former US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi next week on the sidelines of the Quad summit. "PM has many meetings that we are trying to fix within the limited time," the MEA spokesperson said.

PM Modi is scheduled to visit the US on a three-day trip to attend the sixth Quad Summit being held on September 21. The summit was initially supposed to be hosted by India, but the venue was moved at the US's request.

The former president announced at a campaign rally in Michigan on September 17 that he would be meeting PM Modi during his visit, but gave no more details. At the same rally, Trump also deemed India "an abuser" on the issue of import tariffs and called PM Modi a "fantastic man".

PM Modi and Trump last met in 2020 when the then US president visited India. The meeting was described by the Indian prime minister as a 'path-breaking moment' in fostering relations between the two nations.

In addition to the summit, PM Modi is also scheduled to address th Indian-American community in New York. He will, on September 23, also address the Summit of the Future in the UN General Assembly.

The prime minister's visit comes at a time when the US is approaching its presidential elections on November 5, with polls showing a tight race between Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris.
