At least 11 people, including a child, were wounded after Russia launched an overnight missile and drone attack on Kyiv early on Saturday, according to Ukraine's State Emergency Service. In a separate development, Ukraine's General Staff said Ukrainian forces struck Russian vessels in the Sea of Azov overnight.
Ukraine said the strike at sea damaged 21 tankers used to transport oil and petroleum products. It also said four tugboats, two cargo ships and a dredging vessel used by Russian forces for military logistics were damaged.
In Kyiv, explosions and fires were reported in the Solomianskyi, Darnytskyi and Dniprovskyi districts, the emergency service said on Telegram. In Solomianskyi district, a strike set a three-storey office and warehouse building on fire. Another warehouse caught fire in Dniprovskyi district after it was hit.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russia launched 12 missiles of various types, including six ballistic missiles, along with 121 drones overnight. He said most of the drones and some of the missiles were shot down, but none of the ballistic missiles were intercepted, repeating Ukraine's concerns over gaps in its air defences.
Ukrainian air defences said they shot down or electronically suppressed two missiles and 111 drones. The Air Force said direct hits were recorded at 11 locations from ballistic missiles, two guided air-to-surface missiles and seven attack drones. Falling debris from intercepted weapons was reported at three more locations.
Russia's Defence Ministry said its forces had targeted drone production facilities in Kyiv, as well as the ports of Izmail and Chornomorsk in Ukraine's southern Odesa region. The ministry also said Russian air defences destroyed 178 Ukrainian drones overnight over eight Russian regions, as well as over the Russian-occupied Crimean Peninsula and the Black and Azov seas.
Russian officials gave a different account of the Sea of Azov attack. They said one person was killed in the drone strike and that only four ships came under attack. Local Governor Yuri Slyusar said the person killed was a sailor on a technical support vessel, and that the four vessels, including a tanker carrying methanol, suffered only minor damage.
The overnight attacks left people wounded in Kyiv, caused fires and damage at several locations, and were followed by rival claims from both sides over strikes on Russian vessels and air attacks across Ukraine and Russian-held areas.
