Deep depression to weaken, but rain to continue across central India on Friday

The IMD said the deep depression over north coastal Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha will weaken gradually as it moves inland. Even so, its moisture is expected to keep heavy to very heavy rain active across several central and eastern states on Friday.

Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected across parts of Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh and Vidarbha on Friday, even as the deep depression over the region weakens gradually, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

The system, which formed over the Bay of Bengal and moved inland after crossing the Andhra Pradesh–Odisha coast, was located over north coastal Andhra Pradesh and adjoining south Odisha at 11:30 am on Thursday. It was centred about 60 km southeast of Rayagada in Odisha.

The system was moving northwestwards at around 10 kmph and had maximum sustained winds of 50–60 kmph, gusting to 70 kmph.

The IMD expects it to weaken into a depression by Thursday evening and continue moving north-northwestwards over the following 24 hours. By Friday morning, it is forecast to remain a depression with winds of 40–50 kmph, gusting to 60 kmph.

Despite the weakening system, its associated moisture will continue to produce significant rainfall.

ODISHA AND CHHATTISGARH ON ALERT

Interior Odisha and Chhattisgarh are expected to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places on Friday. Odisha could continue to see heavy rainfall on Saturday, while Chhattisgarh is likely to receive isolated heavy rainfall.

The IMD has warned of extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places in south Chhattisgarh on Thursday, with heavy to very heavy rain expected to continue into Friday.

East Madhya Pradesh is likely to see light to moderate rain at many places, with isolated heavy rainfall continuing from Thursday through Sunday. The IMD has forecast very heavy rainfall at isolated places on Friday and Saturday.

The system will continue to influence east Telangana and north coastal Andhra Pradesh. Heavy rainfall is expected at isolated places over east Telangana and north coastal Andhra Pradesh on Friday.

Jharkhand and Gangetic West Bengal are also likely to receive isolated heavy rainfall on Friday, following widespread rain on Thursday.

Vidarbha could also experience heavy rainfall at isolated places on Friday.

The IMD said the system is under continuous surveillance by the Doppler Weather Radar at Visakhapatnam.
