Delhi Lieutenant Governor on Sunday released a video highlighting what he termed as the 'hellish condition' of people under the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government, highlighting issues such as overflowing sewers, erratic electricity supply, inadequate water availability, and piles of garbage in various parts of the national capital.
In response, AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal thanked the Lieutenant Governor for bringing these issues to light and assured that the government would take steps to resolve them.
The video by Lt Governor VK Saxena featured visuals from his visits to the affected areas, including one he conducted on Saturday. He urged the Delhi government to address these "hellish conditions" and prioritise the provision of basic amenities for residents.
"It was extremely disappointing and disturbing to witness the helplessness and pitiable lives of lakhs of people in the capital again yesterday," the Lt Governor said, pointing out that each instance is explained in a tweet.
"The stinking water accumulated on the streets and roads is not from the rain, but from the overflowing sewers. The women narrating their problems and heart-rending sufferings are from Delhi, not from any other state or country," he pointed out.
Saxena added that the areas he visited lacked a proper drainage system, leading to narrow lanes filled with silt and dirty water. Roads were in poor condition, the electricity supply was unreliable, and there was a severe water shortage, forcing women to fetch water from a tanker that comes only once every 7-8 days.
The Lt Governor said he assured the residents that basic amenities would be provided and a cleaning drive would begin on Monday. He also stated that he would personally oversee the progress to ensure residents receive the basic amenities needed for a quality life.
“I urge the former Chief Minister, the current Chief Minister, and the concerned Ministers of the Delhi Government to visit these areas and witness these hellish conditions for themselves. They must take immediate steps to improve this pathetic situation,” the Lt Governor said.
“LET'S COME TOGETHER & MAKE DELHI GREAT AGAIN!” he said, while concluding the lengthy social media post.
KEJRIWAL PROMISES ACTION
Kejriwal, who was the Chief Minister of Delhi until September this year, thanked the Lt Governor for pointing out the civic issues and said that the government, currently headed by Chief Minister Atishi, will address them.
“I thank the Lieutenant Governor from the bottom of my heart for pointing out the shortcomings in us, and we will work to remove those shortcomings,” he said.
“We are having the roads built in the areas where he previously pointed out broken roads. Soon, Chief Minister Atishi will inaugurate them. We will also ensure the place shown by the Lieutenant Governor is cleaned today. I want to tell the LG that if he points out our shortcomings, we will continue to address them,” Kejriwal said at a press conference.
