In Short

  • Nothing rolls out stable Nothing OS 5.0 based on Android 17 with 80-plus new features and upgrades
  • Phone (3) gets the update first, while other Nothing and CMF devices will receive it in coming months
  • The new build marks the company's biggest software rollout to date

Nothing has officially launched Nothing OS 5.0, rolling out its major software upgrade based on the latest Android 17 operating system. The update is available right now for Nothing Phone (3) users, serving as the company's biggest software release to date with over 80 new features, design enhancements, and system-level performance upgrades.

While Phone (3) owners receive the stable build immediately, other Nothing and CMF smartphone models are scheduled to follow in staged batches over the coming months.

The update introduces significant aesthetic refinements across the board. The refreshed interface features transparent styling across widgets and the search bar, alongside an adaptive color engine that harmonizes tones with the active wallpaper.

Lock screens receive a dedicated hardware-inspired "Micrographics" clock face, designed to bring the time, date, local weather, and calendar entries into a single glanceable hub, while the core interface transitions to the clean Geist typeface and updated system iconography.

Home screen management is also streamlined, allowing users to batch-move multiple apps and widgets simultaneously alongside new widgets like "Collector" and "Away Time."

Under-the-Hood Improvements and Essential AI

Nothing OS 5.0 optimizes fluidity through reworked animations, quicker touch response, and superior background memory retention.

Intelligence capabilities are substantially expanded under the Essential AI suite, which introduces an on-device Essential Apps Builder that generates simple custom utilities from natural language prompts, improved voice transcription through Essential Voice, and automated Smart Collections inside Essential Space.

Android 17 Features and Rollout Details

Because the update is built entirely atop Android 17, devices also inherit core platform upgrades including split panels for notifications and quick settings, expanded Quick Share interoperability, updated privacy toggles, and a redesigned recents menu.

Phone (3) owners can download the rollout by navigating to Settings, selecting System, and opening System Update, though regional phasing means the notification may take a few days to reach every unit.
