Jana Nayagan box office Day 2: Vijay's farewell film lags behind Leo, GOAT

Actor-turned-politician Thalapathy Vijay's Jana Nayagan crossed Rs 100 crore worldwide in two days. Even so, its opening pace remained below his previous hits Leo and The Greatest of All Time.

Thalapathy Vijay’s Jana Nayagan crossed Rs 100 crore at the worldwide box office in two days, but its early numbers remained behind the actor-turned-politician’s previous hits Leo (2023) and The Greatest of All Time (2024). The film has collected Rs 112.50 crore in worldwide gross so far, including Rs 75 crore in India gross and Rs 37.50 crore from overseas. Its total India nett collection stands at Rs 63.85 crore across 25,257 shows.

Billed as Vijay’s farewell film, Jana Nayagan opened on Thursday with Rs 42.70 crore nett and Rs 50.28 crore gross, before adding Rs 21.15 crore nett and Rs 24.72 crore gross on Friday. After two days, the film’s India nett total stands at Rs 63.85 crore, lower than the two-day nett of The Greatest of All Time at Rs 69.50 crore and Leo at Rs 99.05 crore.

In the same two-day period, The Greatest of All Time collected Rs 44 crore nett on Day 1 and Rs 25.50 crore nett on Day 2, taking its total India nett collection to Rs 69.50 crore. Its India gross stood at Rs 80.94 crore, overseas collections at Rs 73 crore, and worldwide gross at Rs 152.94 crore.

Leo had posted even bigger numbers over its first two days. It earned Rs 64.80 crore nett on Day 1 and Rs 34.25 crore nett on Day 2, taking its India nett total to Rs 99.05 crore. Its India gross stood at Rs 115.21 crore, overseas collections at Rs 95 crore, and worldwide gross at Rs 210.21 crore.

According to trade website Sacnilk, Jana Nayagan recorded an occupancy of 41.6 per cent across 13,067 shows on its opening day, Thursday. It collected Rs 42.70 crore nett and Rs 50.28 crore gross. On Friday, the film earned Rs 21.15 crore nett and Rs 24.72 crore gross, with an occupancy of 29.5 per cent from 12,190 shows.

Regional performance

Tamil Nadu remained the film’s strongest market. The state contributed Rs 26 crore on Day 1 and Rs 15 crore on Day 2, taking the two-day total to Rs 41 crore.

Karnataka was the second-highest contributor. It collected Rs 11.25 crore on the opening day and Rs 3.22 crore on Friday, taking its cumulative total to Rs 14.47 crore.

Kerala earned Rs 5.50 crore on Day 1 and Rs 2 crore on Day 2, taking its total to Rs 7.50 crore. Andhra Pradesh and Telangana collected Rs 4.25 crore on Thursday and Rs 2 crore on Friday, with a two-day total of Rs 6.25 crore.

The rest of India contributed Rs 3.28 crore on the opening day and Rs 2.50 crore on Day 2, taking its cumulative collection to Rs 5.78 crore. Across all Indian territories, the film’s two-day gross collection stands at Rs 75 crore.

About the film

Directed by H. Vinoth, Jana Nayagan is Vijay’s final theatrical release before his full-time political career. The film stars Vijay as Vetri Kondan, a former police officer who is determined to fulfil a promise by training his adopted daughter, Viji, played by Mamitha Baiju, to become a soldier. Bobby Deol plays John Himler, the antagonist.

India Today gave the film 2 stars. A part of the review read: “Somewhere around the interval, the film loses the plot entirely and starts throwing everything it can think of at the screen — geopolitical unrest abroad, cross-border terror threats at home, aerial combat, machines squaring off against machines and against people. It’s meant to feel epic; instead it tips the film over into a self-indulgent drama that cares only about one man.”

With Rs 112.50 crore in worldwide gross collections in two days, Jana Nayagan has made a strong start at the box office.
