Kerala student killed by classmate in Uzbekistan

New-Delhi: In a tragic incident, a 21-year-old medical student from Kerala died after a classmate assaulted her during a heated argument in Uzbekistan.

The deceased has been identified as Savariya Basanth, 21, a native of Harippad in Alappuzha district. She was a first-year medical student at Bukhara State Medical Institute in Uzbekistan. She was killed by her classmate, Sadarul Anam, 22, is a native of Pulamanthol in Malappuram district.

The Uzbekistan authorities have arrested the accused.

According to the family, Savariya’s body bore multiple injuries from head to toe, suggesting she had been severely assaulted. The accused struck her on the head during an argument, causing her fatal death.

Janeesh, Savariya’s maternal uncle, who travelled to Uzbekistan to bring back her body, alleged that the accused had been pressuring her to convert her religion, but she had repeatedly refused.

Savariya had enrolled at Bukhara State Medical University in December last year. Sadarul was her classmate. Both male and female students stayed in the same hostel, but in different floors.

As per relatives, Savariya had completed her first semester. Her mother remained in regular contact with her by phone. When the family was unable to reach her on Friday, they contacted the university and later learned about the attack.

After her body was brought to Kerala, a second postmortem was conducted at Alappuzha Medical College. Her funeral was held at her residence in Pallippad.

Her father, Basanth, who works in Kuwait filed a complaint with the Alappuzha District Police Chief seeking a detailed investigation into the circumstances surrounding his daughter’s death.

Acting on the complaint, Haripad Police registered a case against Sadarul Anam, who remains in police custody in Uzbekistan.

The family is demanding that the investigation be carried out in Kerala and that the accused be extradited from Uzbekistan to face legal proceedings in India.
