Three people, two of them lecturers at a private college in Bengaluru, have been arrested for allegedly raping and blackmailing a student. Narendra, a lecturer in physics, and Sandeep, a lecturer in biology, and their friend Anup, who are the accused, were arrested by the Marathahalli police after the victim approached the Karnataka State Women’s Commission.

The harassment started when Narendra befriended the student under false promises of sharing study notes. He reportedly took her to his friend’s house, where he raped her, and later threatened to discredit her if she spoke up. Sandeep then reportedly blackmailed the student using a video recording of the rape, further sexually assaulting her. Anup, the third accused, threatened the student with CCTV footage of her visit and raped her too.

The crimes were committed more than a month ago, but the survivor only notified her parents recently, who in turn approached the Karnataka State Women’s Commission. A written complaint was lodged, and the police registered a case and arrested the accused. The case was registered on July 5 and the three accused persons were arrested on the basis of the complaint of the victim, according to Ramesh Banoth, Joint Commissioner of Police, East Division.

The police are currently probing the case, and the accused have been brought before a magistrate. This arrest follows a recent incident in Odisha where a student of Fakir Mohan (Autonomous) College in Balasore killed herself after inaction on her sexual harassment complaint against a lecturer, demonstrating the necessity for prompt action in such situations.
