6 killed as three-storey chawl collapses in Mumbai

Mumbai: Six, including four women, died in Mumbai when part of a three-storey chawl collapsed in Janta Nagar, Mankhurd, on Saturday night.

A part of the G+3 chawl gave way around 8.30 pm Saturday, said the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

Two to three houses in Chawl No. 5 adjacent to the collapsed building also caved in, trapping a number of residents.

Teams from the Mumbai Fire Brigade, BMC, and police were dispatched to the scene.

While six victims have been declared dead, one person, injured in the collapse, has been admitted to a hospital.

Search operations to ensure nobody is trapped are ongoing. The reason behind the collapse is yet to be found, said police officials.
