India’s own AI model like ChatGPT to soon be ready in next 10 months, claims Ashwini Vaishnaw
by Sunita · KalingaTVUnion Minister of Electronics and IT, Ashwini Vaishnaw, has announced that India will soon have its Artificial Intelligence (AI) model like ChatGPT and DeepSeek. This will mark the country’s journey to a big milestone on the path of AI.
According to the Electronics and IT Minister, the country will develop its own large language model (LLM) on which the AI model will be built. He claimed that the AI model will be built in around 10 months. He made this announcement at the Utkarsh Odisha Conclave, which is being held in Odisha. Furthermore, he revealed that the groundwork for the AI model has already been laid and framework is also ready. This AI model will solely focus on the needs of the Indian users.
“Over the last 1.5 years, our teams have been working closely with startups, researchers, professors etc. Today, we are calling for proposals to develop our own foundational model. The model will take care of the Indian context, languages, and culture, are devoid of biases,” Vaishnaw said.
The country already has a solid infrastructure and has secured over 18,600 GPUs, which will help in training the AI model. Most of the GPUs are high-performance NVIDIA H100 and H200. It also has some MI325 models. Though, India currently has less GPUs than the ChatGPT, which has a strong advanced computing system of 25,000 GPUs. It still has a large GPU base in comparison to DeepSeek AI that was trained on 2,500 GPUs.
Vaishnaw stressed that this infrastructure will play a key role in the country’s AI mission, helping to develop models that can rival global competitors.
The government has also introduced a common computing facility, which will be available to AI startups, developers, and researchers. This facility, equipped with 18,000 GPUs, will provide access to advanced computing resources, helping smaller players contribute to AI development without the heavy costs usually associated with such infrastructure. Already, 10,000 GPUs are operational, with more to come online soon. Vaishnaw noted the importance of this facility in democratising AI development.
India’s AI model is currently under development, with six major developers working on it. The government expects the first versions to be ready within 4 to 10 months. The model is being designed to handle India’s vast linguistic and cultural diversity. Vaishnaw expressed confidence in the project, stating that advancements in algorithmic efficiency would enable India to produce a world-class AI model in a shorter timeframe
