New Delhi: Times Square in New York City descended into chaos on Thursday afternoon as tourists and local citizens fled for their lives after a shooting broke out.

Scores of frantic pedestrians ran through the streets while New York City Police Officers raced to respond to the active shooting.

Crowds converged for massive citywide celebrations for the New York Knicks’ championship victory earlier that day.

Shots could be heard being fired in the streets before frantic crowds began streaming into local stores, restaurants, and businesses to find safety.

Video footage, which is being widely shared online and on social media sites, shows the panic ensuing as witnesses sprint through Times Square to find protection.

A police search was initiated immediately after reports were filed around 3:30 PM EST at West 44th Street and Seventh Avenue.

It did not take long for at least one suspected gunman to be apprehended with a weapon seized.

Sources confirm that a civilian victim was wounded by a bullet and transported to a nearby hospital, although the nature of the wound is currently unconfirmed.

Investigators continue to search for the cause and possible suspects of the shooting.
