New Delhi: Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) leaders Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka were sent to judicial custody for five days on Wednesday.

The reason behind it is entering the Jantar Mantar in New Delhi after it was removed from the list of designated protest sites by police.

Meanwhile, their associate Ajinkya Shinde was also granted bail on a personal bond. The trio was taken into custody by the police on Tuesday for raising slogans calling for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

Delhi Police lodged a case against the CJP members for trespassing, disobeying prohibitory orders, breach of peace bond and preventing a public servant from discharging his/her duty.

According to reports, Das and Ranka had signed bonds promising to keep the peace and good behaviour for a year after they were detained during a previous protest in the city.

Police claimed the two had breached the terms of those bonds.

The accused were presented before a Special Executive Magistrate at Mandir Marg on Wednesday morning.

According to the legal team, the action was called into question, challenging the police charge and arguing that the custody order had been issued on the suspicion of the activists possibly committing an offence.

The party’s advocates further claimed that the leaders were not allowed to meet with their attorneys till late at night.

The detention occurred as the CJP and others held protests over suspected violations during the Special Intensive Revision of the voters’ lists.

The party has criticised the removal of Jantar Mantar as an authorised protest venue, arguing that relocating demonstrations would reduce their visibility in the national capital.

The latest custody order has intensified the dispute over the restrictions on demonstrations and the CJP’s efforts to continue its protest in central Delhi.
