Bhubaneswar: Another cyclone is likely to form over the Bay of Bengal, raising fresh concerns for coastal states, particularly Andhra Pradesh and Odisha, even as the impact of the previous cyclonic storm is yet to subside.
The well-marked low-pressure area over the southeast Bay of Bengal has intensified into a depression and may further strengthen into a cyclonic storm, according to the weather forecast.
If the system develops into a cyclonic storm, it will be named ‘Murasu’, a name proposed by India.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the low-pressure area that was positioned over the South Andaman Sea and adjoining North Andaman Sea and Andaman and Nicobar Islands on Friday moved west-northwestwards.
By 8.30 AM on Saturday, October 31, the system had intensified into a depression over the southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and the Andaman Sea.
The weather system is expected to continue moving west-northwestwards and may intensify further into a cyclonic storm.
As per the forecast, the system is likely to reach the west-central Bay of Bengal, close to the Andhra Pradesh coast, by the evening of November 2.
However, the exact location and timing of its possible landfall remain uncertain. The IMD has not indicated that the system will cross the coast on November 2, although it is expected to approach the Andhra Pradesh coastline by that evening.

Meanwhile, the Regional Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar has indicated that rainfall activity in Odisha is likely to increase from November 2 under the influence of the developing weather system.
Southern Odisha districts are expected to experience a greater impact, with strong winds and rainfall likely in several areas.
According to the forecast, no significant rainfall activity is expected across Odisha on October 31 and November 1, although light to moderate rain may occur at isolated places.
However, rainfall intensity is likely to increase from November 2 as the system approaches the Andhra Pradesh coast.
Districts including Ganjam, Gajapati, Puri, Khordha, Rayagada, Koraput and Malkangiri may experience strong surface winds reaching speeds of 40–50 kmph, gusting up to 60 kmph.
Wind speeds associated with the developing weather system may reach around 70 kmph in some areas, according to the forecast cited.
With another potential cyclonic storm developing over the Bay of Bengal, attention has once again turned towards the coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh and southern Odisha.
