New Delhi: Following the Madras High Court’s blanket ban on the slaughter of cows and calves in the state, the Tamil Nadu government has moved the Supreme Court challenging the order.
This has set off a political storm in Tamil Nadu.
The government filed a petition before the Supreme Court arguing that the Madras High Court’s order goes against the Tamil Nadu Animal Preservation Act, 1958,
This act allows the slaughter of a cow over 10 years of age if it is deemed unfit for breeding or work by the authority prescribed in that respect.

The petition argued that the case originally moved before the HC asked only for a ban on cow slaughter in public during the Bakrid festival in Coimbatore.
However, HC gave directions for the total ban on cow slaughter throughout the state beyond the scope of relief prayed for by the original petitioner.
The matter is currently pending before the Supreme Court with the state praying for the quashing of the HC’s order.
