New Delhi: NIA Court extended the custody of 26/11 terror attack accused Tahawwur Hussain Rana for 12 days said reliable reports in this regard on  Monday. According to reports, the Mumbai attacks accused Tahawwur Rana was brought to the Patiala House court after the end of his 18-day NIA remand.

Earlier on April 21, the Delhi Patiala House Court had issued a notice to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in response to an application filed by Tahawwur Rana, seeking permission to communicate with his family.

Tahawwur Hussain Rana, a Pakistani-Canadian accused of terrorism, is a former military doctor with a history of alleged involvement in terror-related activities. He was recently extradited from the United States to India.

Recently, while granting Rana’s remand to the NIA, the court acknowledged evidence suggesting a wide-ranging terror conspiracy spanning multiple cities, with potential targets extending beyond India’s borders.

Rana faces multiple charges under the IPC and UAPA, including conspiracy, terrorism, forgery, and waging war. The court noted that under extradition laws, he can only be prosecuted for offences sanctioned in the extradition agreement. Furthermore, as Sections 16 and 18 of the UAPA apply, extended police custody beyond standard CrPC limitations may be permitted due to the terrorism-related nature of the charges.

Piyush Sachdev, counsel representing 26/11 terror attack accused Tahawwur Rana, told ANI, “The accused has been sent into custody for 12 more days. NIA wants to confront him with more evidence. NIA said they need more time. Tahawwur Rana is under investigation. I have been meeting him very regularly.”
