Instagram content creators can now upload longer Reels videos up to three minutes long on the platform, announced head Adam Mosseri via a video. Prior to this, the Reels videos were limited to up to 90 seconds.

Earlier, YouTube allowed users to upload Shorts videos up to three minutes long.

Mosseri showed revealed that users can now upload Reels to Instagram that are up to three minutes long. He added that usually it’s been only 90 seconds, and that’s because we wanted to focus Instagram on short-form videos and not long-form. But the policy was changed as per creators feedback who raised complaints that 90 seconds is just too short. He hopes that this will help users to show what they want to showcase without limiting it.

This isn’t the only update coming to Instagram. The platform will soon replace its iconic square profile grids with rectangular ones. According to Mosseri, this change was made because most content uploaded to the platform is in a vertical orientation, and square grids tend to crop such content excessively.

Lastly, Instagram will start showing your liked Reels to your friends. This update will highlight the likes and reactions on Reels, which means users might need to be more mindful of what they like or comment on, especially if they prefer to keep their activity private.
