22 killed as crane falls on train in northeast Thailand

Bangkok: Atleast 22 people were killed after a construction crane fell on a passenger train in northeast Thailand, police said. The train was enroute Ubon Ratchathani province from Thailand’s capital, Bangkok.

The accident occurred on Wednesday morning in the Sikhio district of Nakhon Ratchasima province, which is 230 km northeast of Bangkok.

As per police, the crane was working on a high-speed rail project when it collapsed and crashed onto the passing train, causing multiple coaches to derail before bursting into flames.

Following which 22 people were killed and over 30 passengers have sustained injuries. The fire has been doused off, and rescue work is currently underway, police said.

Transport Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn in a statement said there were 195 passengers on board and that he had ordered a thorough investigation into the incident.

Search and rescue teams are currently working to locate passengers who may still be trapped inside the train. Emergency workers, firefighters and police personnel have been deployed in large numbers to know the exact reason behind the tragedy.
