Delhi High Court allows Sonam Wangchuk to be shifted to Medanta Hospital

New-Delhi: The Delhi Court on Tuesday allowed climate activist Sonam Wangchuk who was on a hunger strike as part of the Cockroach Janta Party’s protests over the NEET exam paper leak row – to be moved from the state-run Safdarjung Hospital to Medanta, a private facility.

The court’s direction came on a plea filed by Wangchuk’s wife, Gitanjali J. Angmo, seeking his transfer from Safdarjung Hospital to Medanta, citing his deteriorating health following a prolonged hunger strike at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar.

The Bench said, “What we propose to do is we get him shifted to Medanta. He will be treated there. All treatment details, everything, reports etc which have been done at Safdarjung will be supplied to Medanta.”

The High court also directed Medanta Hospital to constitute a panel of doctors to treat Wangchuk.

Appearing for the Centre, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta said the government had no objection to Wangchuk being shifted to Medanta, describing it as a reputed hospital.

However, he requested that the activist should not leave the hospital against medical advice and that any future discharge should be based on the opinion of Medanta’s doctors.

Accepting the proposal, the Bench indicated that Wangchuk would be shifted to Medanta and that all his treatment records, investigation reports and medical documents from Safdarjung Hospital would be supplied to the private hospital to ensure continuity of care. The Solicitor General agreed to the proposed arrangement.

Before rising for lunch, the Bench thanked the doctors from AIIMS, Safdarjung Hospital and Wangchuk’s medical team for assisting the court and said it would pass formal directions on the transfer after the lunch recess.
