‘Not Much Left for Govt to Do’: Centre Tells SC on Stopping Nimisha Priya’s Yemen Execution
by KalingaTV Bureau · KalingaTVAdvertisement
The Supreme Court has heard a plea seeking directions to the Indian government to intervene and save Nimisha Priya, and Indian national from Kerala who is currently facing the death penalty in murder case in Yemen. The Supreme Court is trying to go through diplomatic negotiations trying to save the Indian national.
According to the sources, the only remaining option to save her is through blood money settlement. This is only possible if the family of deceased is willing to accept it, said the counsel.
The Attorney General of India (AGI) stated that Indian government is making every possible effort to help Priya. He further informed that talks are ongoing with Yemeni authorities, including the public prosecutor who is handling Priya’s case. AGI has discussed to secure a suspension of the execution order until negotiations can be pursued.
However, AGI also said that the Indian government’s ability to intervene is limited, describing the case as very complex issue and adding that there’s no way we can know what’s happening in Yemen.
As per the statement given by the counsel, During the Justice Sandeep Mehta expressed deep concern and remarked that it would be very unfortunate if Priya were to lose her life.
After hearing submissions the Supreme Court scheduled the matter for further hearing on Friday, July 18. The bench stated, “The parties may apprise the Court on the next date about the status of the case.”
