New Delhi: An unprecedented scene unfolded inside the Supreme Court on Friday when a petitioner hurled abuses at judges, threw case files in the air, and threatened the bench during a hearing.
Despite the misconduct, the Supreme Court chose not to initiate any legal action against him.
The incident took place during the hearing of a plea filed by a man named Prabal Pratap, challenging an order of the Allahabad High Court. The matter was being heard by a bench of Justice K.V. Viswanathan and Justice Alok Aradhe.
What Happened in Court
According to a video that has since gone viral on social media, the petitioner addressed the judges and said:
“Mr. Judicial Servant, I am ordering you to direct the registration of an FIR against the ACP of Lucknow Vikas Nagar.”
Taken aback, Justice Viswanathan asked, “Are you ordering us?”

To this, the petitioner replied, “I am Sovereign.”
The situation escalated further when the man threw his case files in the air and started abusing the court in foul language. As security personnel escorted him out of the courtroom, he continued shouting and said, “Ye de dena CJI ko” — “Give this to the Chief Justice of India.”
Supreme Court Shows Restraint
Despite the outburst and disrespectful behavior, the bench handled the matter with remarkable patience. The court went ahead and dismissed the petition on merits. The judges also made it clear that no legal proceedings or contempt action would be initiated against the petitioner for his conduct inside the courtroom.
Legal experts noted that the Supreme Court’s decision reflects judicial restraint and a choice to not give undue importance to provocation, while still upholding the dignity of the institution.
The viral video has sparked widespread discussion online about courtroom decorum and the limits of free expression in judicial proceedings.
