Veteran director Bharathiraja passes away at 85, Tamil cinema mourns a legend

Mumbai: Veteran filmmaker Bharathiraja, a legend who transformed rural narratives in Indian film, passed away on Wednesday morning in Chennai after suffering age-related health conditions at the age of 85. An official reason of death has not been given.
His death was announced by the Tamil Film Producers Council, expressing their grief over the demise of one of the influential filmmakers of Tamil cinema. He had also served as its president.
Bharathiraja was celebrated as the champion of the rural theme, having introduced realistic village narratives and the world of localism and commoners into the mainstream cinema. Over a career span of five decades, he had been credited with directing many critically and commercially successful movies that impacted Indian films in a huge way.
He had also received various accolades for his contributions to film and earned the respect of both audiences and fellow filmmakers. A number of actors, technicians, and directors have credited him with paving their path to the industry.

Messages began to pour in shortly after the news broke. Actor, producer, and politician Khushbu Sundar called it a “dark day for Tamil cinema”. Film personalities, politicians, and others joined in to pay tributes.
Condolences poured in from all over the country. Information about his funeral and last rites is to be announced by his family and representatives of the industry.
His passing signals an era in Indian filmmaking that came to a close, but his impact will undoubtedly live on through generations of storytellers.
