Karwar: President Droupadi Murmu on Sunday undertook a submarine sortie onboard the Indian Navy’s frontline submarine INS Vaghsheer at the Karwar Naval Base in Karnataka, becoming only the second President of India to do so after Dr APJ Abdul Kalam.

The President embarked on the indigenous Kalvari-class submarine on the Western Seaboard, marking her maiden experience aboard a submarine of this class. Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi accompanied her during the sortie, officials said.

“This maiden sortie onboard a Kalvari-class submarine by President Droupadi Murmu is the second by a President of India, after former President Dr APJ Abdul Kalam,” the Navy noted. In February 2006, Dr Kalam became the first President to undertake a submarine sortie.

INS Vaghsheer, the sixth and final submarine under the P75 Scorpene project, was commissioned into the Indian Navy in January this year. Considered among the world’s most silent and versatile diesel-electric submarines, it is equipped for anti-surface and anti-submarine warfare, intelligence gathering, surveillance, and special operations.

The Karwar naval base is being developed in line with India’s long-term maritime security interests in the Indian Ocean region.
