Bengaluru: The Karnataka High Court has ordered a ban on bike taxis such as Ola, Uber, and Rapido. The High Court has directed stoppage of bike taxi services in the state.

According to reports, the court has given a time frame of six weeks to cease the operations. It has further directed the state government to frame necessary guidelines within a timespan of three months.

Justice BM Shyam Prasad heard the matter and directed that bike taxis cannot operate unless the government defines rules clearly under Section 93 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. This hearing came as a response to the regular controversy relating to aggregator licenses and recognition of bike taxis as a mode of transport.

The cab aggregators have been in news for all wrong reasons since some time back in January 23, Union Minister of Consumer Affairs, Pralhad Joshi had announced that the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) had issued notices to major cab aggregators, Ola and Uber, over alleged differential pricing based on the type of smartphone being used by consumers.

More recently on March 24, cab drivers in Hyderabad launched a no AC campaign, protesting against low earnings and high fuel costs under Ola, Uber and Rapido. The cab driver union are demanding fair fare policies, urging the government to stand up for them as the summer heat has intensified.
