New Delhi: The accident has called for a safety audit of old railway infrastructure statewide. A 100-year-old clock tower in Kozhikode Railway Station collapsed.
A hundred-year-old clock tower in Kerala’s Kozhikode Railway Station, which had been declared unsafe and earmarked for demolition, collapsed, narrowly avoiding what could have been a major disaster.
The structure collapsed on Platform 2.
Railway officials said that there were visible cracks on the 20-25 metre tall clock tower.
The area had been evacuated beforehand, and there were no passengers or railway employees on the platform when the building crashed.

This happened on the day of torrential rains in the district.
Pictures of the incident showed that a large chunk of the tower had come down on the platform. Some nearby facilities were also affected.
CPI(M) MLA P.A. Mohamed Riyas criticized the Railways for not putting up any signboards or barricades around the weakened structure, even though it was known.
The incident also forced the legislator to demand a safety audit of old railway buildings across the state.
