Tamil Nadu Ammonia Gas Leak Case: Another Odia migrant dies, death toll rises to 10

Chennai: The death toll in the ammonia gas leak at a seafood processing and export facility in Tiruvallur district rose to 10 after another woman worker from Odisha died.

The deceased has been identified as Deepanjali Juang of Talaraidiha village under Banspal block in Keonjhar district. She was undergoing treatment at the hospital, where she succumbed.

Earlier in the day, Rita Juang, daughter of Pitambar Juang from Tangiri Dubanali Sahi under Telkoi police limits also passed away during treatment.

Most of the deceased belonged to the Juang tribal community of Keonjhar district and had migrated to Tamil Nadu for employment.

The workers who had earlier lost their lives in the incident were identified as Shibani and Gita of Tangiri village under Telkoi police limits, Gumani and Jamini of Rangamatia village, Phulamani and Sajani of Kodipasa under Banspal block, Champabati of Talachampei village, and Subasi Juang of the Kantal area under Harichandanpur block.

The Tamil Nadu government on Thursday announced that 67 individuals are still undergoing medical treatment following the June 21 industrial accident at St Peter & Paul Seafoods Exports Private Limited in the Kannigaipair and Manjangaranai area near Periyapalayam.

The government stated that the bodies of five victims were airlifted to Odisha on June 23, and two additional victims were flown back on June 24.

Out of a total of 83 people affected by the leak, 67 individuals, comprising 64 females and three males remain under medical observation. Health officials confirmed that 16 patients are on ventilator support, 21 are receiving nasal oxygen, and 30 are stable. Five individuals have been successfully discharged.

The workers currently receiving treatment hail from various states, with 32 from Odisha, 16 from Assam, nine from Jharkhand, six from Tamil Nadu, three from Kerala, and one from West Bengal. They are admitted across Vels Hospital, Venkateswara Hospital, Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital and Stanley Hospital.
