"That's enough now… no more fantasies": Greenland's prime minister responds to Trump
by Ellsworth Toohey · Boing BoingGreenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen has had enough. After President Trump's latest remarks about needing to take over the Arctic territory, Nielsen posted a blunt message: "That's enough now. No more pressure. No more insinuations. No more fantasies of annexation."
Trump's long-running interest in acquiring Greenland took on new weight this weekend, days after U.S. forces captured Nicolás Maduro in Venezuela. When reporters asked which country might face similar treatment, Trump told them Greenland is "so strategic right now" and claimed the territory is "covered with Russian and Chinese ships all over the place." He added that the U.S. needs Greenland for national security and that "Denmark is not going to be able to do it."
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen called the comments nonsensical, stating that the United States has "no right to annex any of the three countries in the Danish kingdom." European allies quickly lined up behind her. Finland's president posted that "no one decides for Greenland and Denmark but Greenland and Denmark themselves." British Prime Minister Keir Starmer echoed the sentiment. France's foreign ministry declared that "borders cannot be changed by force."
Nielsen left the door open for dialogue — "through the proper channels and with respect for international law." But the mood shifted in December when Trump appointed Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as special envoy to Greenland.
Over the weekend, Katie Miller, wife of Trump's deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller, posted the word "soon" alongside an image of a U.S. flag superimposed on Greenland.
