PDP rallies in Kashmir over BJP leader's 'disrespectful' remarks against 1931 martyrs
by GK Web Desk · Greater KashmirSrinagar, Mar 06: Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) on Thursday held a protest demonstration in several parts of Kashmir over “disrespectful” remarks used by BJP leader Sunil Sharma against July 13, 1931 martyrs.
In Srinagar the protest was led by party senior leader Iltija Mufti who demanded an apology from BJP leader, and accused the saffron party of attempting to erase J&K’s collective history and memoir.
The protesters were carrying placards with slogans written therein “Remember – Respect and honor martyrs of 13th July 1931, Martyrs of 13th July 1931 are our heroes, 13 July 1931: Their sacrifices is our pride” etc.
“Our martyrs fought 70 years ago against autocratic and oppressive rule,” Iltija Mufti said while speaking to the reporters during a protest demonstration in Srinagar. “Their sacrifices galvanized the political movement and the political consciousness of the people of Jammu & Kashmir. We will not tolerate any disrespect against them,” she said.
She criticized BJP leader and Leader of Opposition in J&K Legislative Assembly, Sunil Sharma for allegedly calling the July 13 martyrs “arsonists,” labeling his remarks as “absolutely disgusting.” She asserted that the BJP has consistently attempting to redraw Kashmir’s history and vowed to resist such efforts tooth and nail.
“We want BJP leader to apologize. Those laid their lives on July 13, 1931 are our martyrs, and we will not allow their legacy to be tarnished,” she added.
The controversy has reignited tensions over the historical significance of July 13, 1931- a day officially recognized in Jammu and Kashmir as a symbol of resistance against oppression.
Similar protest have witnessed in south Kashmir’s Pulwama where PDP members expressed outrage over “derogatory” remarks used by BJP leader.
