Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated on January 30, 1948, in New Delhi, just months after India gained independence from British colonial rule.
The day is observed annually as Martyrs’ Day to honour Mahatma and others who sacrificed their lives for the country.
Mahatma led India’s freedom struggle through nonviolent resistance, or ahimsa, and civil disobedience, mobilising millions against colonial rule.
Each year, national leaders gather at Raj Ghat, the memorial marking Gandhi’s cremation site in New Delhi, to pay homage.
Prayers and remembrance ceremonies are held across the country, reaffirming Gandhi’s enduring influence on India’s political ethos and national identity.
