World leaders react to India’s ‘Operation Sindoor’, amid cross border tensions
by GK Web Desk · Greater KashmirSrinagar, May 07: Reactions from leaders across the world started pouring in after India’s attack on Pakistan’s terror bases under ‘Operation Sindoor’, with cross-border tensions running high. The strike came two weeks after the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22.
Ministry of Defence wrote a statement on X, “Focused strikes were carried out on nine terrorist infrastructure sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir, targeting the roots of cross-border terror planning,”
The United Nations, through a spokesperson for Secretary-General António Guterres, expressed deep concern over the developments. “The Secretary-General calls for maximum military restraint from both countries. The world cannot afford a military confrontation between India and Pakistan,” the statement said.
U.S. President Donald Trump called it “a shame”. He said, “It’s a shame. I guess people knew something was going to happen based on a little bit of the past.” He further added, “They’ve been fighting for a long time. They’ve been fighting for many, many decades. I hope it ends very quickly.”
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated he was closely monitoring the situation. “I… will continue to engage both Indian and Pakistani leadership towards a peaceful resolution.”
Meanwhile, China called the Indian strikes “regrettable.” A spokesperson for China’s Foreign Ministry emphasized the need for calm: “We urge both sides to act in the larger interest of peace and stability.”
Amid the global calls for restraint, Israel voiced strong support for New Delhi. Israeli Ambassador to India Reuven Azar declared, “Israel supports India’s right for self-defense. Terrorists should know there’s no place to hide from their heinous crimes against the innocent.”
From Japan, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi condemned the April 22 terror attack but also urged de-escalation “In regard to the terrorist act that occurred in Kashmir on April 22, our country firmly condemns such acts of terrorism. Furthermore, we express strong concern that this situation may lead to further retaliatory exchanges and escalate into a full-scale military conflict. For the peace and stability of South Asia, we strongly urge both India and Pakistan to exercise restraint and stabilize the situation through dialogue.”
France has called on India and Pakistan to show restraint. Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot said in an interview “We understand India’s desire to protect itself against the scourge of terrorism, but we obviously call on both India and Pakistan to exercise restraint to avoid escalation and, of course, to protect civilians,”
UAE Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Abdullah bin Sultan bin Zayed Al Nahyan have urged India Pakistan to show restraint, “His Highness reaffirmed that diplomacy and dialogue remain the most effective means of peacefully resolving crises, and achieving the shared aspirations of nations for peace, stability, and prosperity,”
Russia’s foreign ministry said that it was deeply concerned about the deepening military confrontation between India and Pakistan and urged both the countries to show restraint.
