Martin Kemp's heartbreaking family admission as he shares 'biggest regret'
by Matt Jackson · BristolLiveMartin Kemp has candidly shared his "biggest regret" as he made a heartbreaking admission about his late parents.
The 63-year-old, shot to fame with Spandau Ballet alongside older brother Gary during their twenties. It meant the two brothers often found themselves away from home with bandmates Tony Hadley, Steve Norman, and John Keeble.
Despite helping his parents move from north London to a more peaceful setting on the south coast, Martin expressed remorse over not spending more time with them. His father Frank died from a heart attack in 2009 at the age of 79, followed by his mother Eileen just two days later at 77.
Speaking to his son Roman on their podcast FFS, My dad is Martin Kemp, the ex-EastEnders star admitted: "I didn't spend enough time with my mum and dad, that's one of my biggest regrets. When Gary and I first made it in the band, with the first bits of money that was coming in, apart from buying my own flat, I also bought my mum and dad a house.
"I said to my mum and dad, 'Where do you want to go?' because my dad had just had a huge heart attack. My mum and dad said, 'Oh, we'd like to go to Bournemouth' because they'd be near the beach and they can walk, my dad had this huge heart attack he had to recover from.
"For a year my mum and dad were down there and I used to go down probably once every couple of months, and then it got fewer and further between until I would go down. In the end I was going down maybe once, twice a year to go and see them. By that time I was away working, I was on tour at that point."
He estimated that he was around 19 or 20 years old when his parents first relocated from London, reports Gloucestershire Live. Roman however reassured his father it was "normal" not to see your parents too much at that age.
He added: "That's normal mate. Some people when you're 19, 20, 21 go on a gap year, that's basically what you did."
Martin explained he did have the chance to visit his parents more regularly during his younger days, conceding he "chose not to". He later went on to explain more about his relationship with his mum and dad, admitting they rarely told him they loved him.
He explained: "I knew they loved me, they just found it difficult to say 'I love you'. I could always feel it was difficult, in fact, my mum and dad never said, 'I love you,' they said 'love you' because they were too embarrassed to get that 'I love you'."
