The Castle Hotel, Conwy

I spent a night in the UK's most haunted hotel and it was seriously creepy

As the leaves turn a crisp brown and the unmistakable chill of autumn fills the air, it's impossible to ignore that the spookiest time of year is upon us.

What better time then, to plan a stay at one of the UK's most haunted hotels - the Castle Hotel in Conwy? This ancient fishing port may not be the first choice for many tourists who often flock to nearby Betsy-Coed or the ever-popular Isle of Anglesey.

However, with its commanding 15th-century castle, charming cobbled streets, and a beautifully preserved 16th-century Tudor house - arguably the best in the UK - Conwy has plenty to offer, reports the Mirror.

From its picturesque streets ideal for leisurely strolls, to quaint shops and traditional pubs complete with cosy fires and an impressive selection of ales and wines, there's something for everyone in this Welsh gem.

Not to mention the stunning marina, a beautiful harbour boasting breathtaking views of the castle and surrounding Snowdonia, dotted with small fishing boats and crystal clear waters. It's the perfect spot to relax, enjoy some fish and chips, and indulge in a delicious ice cream.

Nestled on the marina, you'll find the country's smallest house - a sight that truly needs to be seen to be believed. It's hard to imagine how a family of six managed to fit into the two minuscule rooms (and it's probably best not to ponder over the lack of washing facilities).

While Conwy is undeniably a picturesque town - and I certainly made the most of my visit - my main purpose was a ghost hunt.

The restaurant serves up amazing dishes

On a crisp afternoon, I checked into The Castle Hotel in Conwy. This charming period property has been accommodating guests for the past 300 years right in the heart of Conwy - ample time for ghosts to claim it as their residence.

The hotel has hosted some very distinguished visitors over the years - from Queen Victoria to poet William Wordsworth and civil engineers Thomas Telford and George Stephenson.

Upon arrival, guests are greeted by the building's impressive facade. Stepping through the doors, you're welcomed by a cosy, inviting bar complete with a real fire - perfect for a quick pick-me-up on a brisk autumn day.

The friendly staff checked me into room 209 - reputedly the most haunted in the hotel.

The Castle Hotel is rumoured to be haunted by the spirit of a former maid who had travelled there to work from her home in Anglesey. She had one stipulation... If she were to die while working there, her remains would be transported back to her beloved home island for burial.

Sadly, her wishes were not respected and the unfortunate maid was laid to rest in the ancient churchyard directly behind - a sight visible from room 209. However, this is not where the tale concludes.

Mere weeks after her death, peculiar incidents began occurring at the hotel. Waitstaff reported being tripped up and water jugs inexplicably shattered.

Eventually, concerned by these unexplained events, the girl's remains were exhumed from her grave and returned to Anglesey, where they remain to this day.

Yet, the eerie occurrences didn't cease there. To this day, staff report hearing footsteps in vacant rooms, pictures along one of the corridors are moved so they no longer hang straight, and lights that had been switched off mysteriously flicker back on.

Bearing all this in mind, I entered the 'most haunted room' with a degree of apprehension and upon opening the curtains, I was met with a sight I will never forget - the breathtaking view of the castle.

The incredible view of Conwy Castle will not soon be forgotten

There are few better views from any of the residences in Conwy. Its majestic turrets loom over the town, bringing its centuries of history to life.

During my three-night stay at the Castle Hotel Conwy, I sampled the delightful evening menu - I highly recommend the risotto and the fish and chips looked irresistible - and enjoyed several drinks in the bustling and cosy bar.

The breakfasts, a delightful spread of Welsh cuisine, were the perfect start to a day spent exploring the town and its picturesque surroundings. Unfortunately, during my three-night stay, I didn't encounter any supernatural entities.

However, the Castle Hotel provided an unforgettable experience for many other delightful reasons.
