Car retail sales in India remained on a strong growth trajectory in June 2026, according to the latest FADA retail data. Total passenger vehicle (PV) registrations stood at 4,10,853 units, registering a 28.63% YoY growth over 3,19,412 units sold in June 2025. On a month-on-month basis, PV retail sales also improved by 2.05%, up from 4,02,591 units recorded in May 2026.

The overall automobile retail market also remained healthy, with total vehicle registrations across all categories reaching 25,57,234 units in June 2026. This represents a 21.83% YoY growth and a 1.03% MoM increase. Passenger vehicles, commercial vehicles and tractors all posted healthy gains, while two-wheeler registrations witnessed a marginal 0.89% sequential decline.

Maruti Suzuki continued to dominate the passenger vehicle retail market with 1,67,834 units, an increase of 36.70% YoY over 1,22,775 units sold in June 2025. The company commanded a 40.85% market share, maintaining its significant lead over the competition.

Tata Motors retained second position with 57,009 units, posting one of the strongest performances among major OEMs. Sales increased by 51.09% YoY, allowing Tata to stay ahead of Mahindra with a 13.88% market share. Mahindra followed closely in third place with 54,099 units, recording a healthy 22.26% YoY growth. Hyundai remained fourth with 44,163 units, while Toyota secured fifth place with 28,818 units, growing 15.13% YoY.

Kia registered 23,166 units, up 18.89%, whereas Skoda Auto Volkswagen India was among the few mainstream manufacturers to report a decline, with sales falling 5.44% to 8,098 units. Among smaller brands, Nissan nearly doubled its volumes with 96.64% YoY growth, while Renault grew 49.65%. VinFast also made its first appearance in the retail rankings with 1,404 units.

MoM performance

Compared to May 2026, total passenger vehicle retail sales improved by 8,262 units. Among the major manufacturers, Toyota recorded the strongest month-on-month growth with a 9.60% increase, followed by Mahindra at 5.43%. Tata Motors also registered a positive 2.64% MoM growth, while Maruti Suzuki remained largely stable with a 1.76% increase. Hyundai (-4.46%), Kia (-6.00%), Renault (-8.51%) and Nissan (-7.10%) witnessed sequential declines during the month.

CY Q2 2026 – Strong quarter for passenger vehicles

For the April-June period (CY Q2 2026), passenger vehicle retail sales reached 12,20,799 units, compared to 10,09,096 units during the corresponding period last year. This translated into a healthy 20.98% YoY growth. Maruti Suzuki remained the market leader with 4,91,268 units, accounting for 40.24% market share.

Tata Motors finished second with 1,70,241 units, ahead of Mahindra at 1,60,646 units. Hyundai retained fourth position with 1,37,835 units, followed by Toyota with 82,118 units and Kia with 73,036 units. Among notable performers, Renault grew 53.56%, Nissan surged 78.06%, while Force Motors registered an impressive 94.10% growth. Skoda Auto Volkswagen India (-9.34%), Mercedes (-4.11%), Jeep (-20.91%) and JLR (-0.50%) were among the brands to report declines during the quarter.

EVs and hybrids continue gaining share

FADA’s fuel-wise retail breakup shows that the Indian passenger vehicle market continues to diversify. Petrol-powered vehicles, including ethanol-compatible models, remained dominant with 43.63% market share in June 2026. However, this was down from 47.68% recorded a year earlier. Diesel’s share also declined to 16.02%, compared to 18.74% in June 2025.

Alternative fuel technologies continued gaining traction. CNG/LPG vehicles increased their share to 24.33%, while hybrids accounted for 8.27% of total passenger vehicle sales. Electric vehicles recorded another strong month, with their market share rising to 7.75%, up significantly from 4.80% in June 2025, highlighting continued consumer acceptance of EVs across multiple price segments.
