Volkswagen India Makes It Official – New Sub 4m SUV Launch In 2027
by Sagar Patel · RushLaneVolkswagen has officially announced an all-new sub-4 metre compact SUV for India, confirming its entry into one of the country’s largest passenger vehicle segments. Scheduled for launch in 2027, the upcoming SUV will be locally manufactured and positioned as Volkswagen’s most accessible model in India.
The announcement follows earlier reports about Volkswagen approving a sub-4m SUV based on Skoda Kylaq. While Volkswagen has not revealed the name or design of the upcoming model, it has now confirmed that the SUV will use the locally developed MQB-A0-IN platform.
Volkswagen’s Most Affordable SUV
Volkswagen says the new compact SUV is being developed specifically for India, with high localisation playing an important role. It will sit below Taigun and become the entry point to Volkswagen’s SUV range in the country.
MQB-A0-IN already underpins Skoda Kylaq, Kushaq and Slavia, along with Volkswagen Taigun and Virtus. Sharing the architecture with Kylaq should allow Volkswagen to keep development and production costs under control while entering the highly competitive sub-4m segment.
Volkswagen has not confirmed powertrain specifications. However, the Kylaq connection makes the 1.0-litre TSI turbo petrol engine a likely choice. On Kylaq, this engine is available with 6-speed manual and 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox options.
Despite sharing its basic architecture and several components with Kylaq, Volkswagen’s SUV is expected to receive a differentiated exterior and interior design. A similar strategy is already followed with Taigun-Kushaq and Virtus-Slavia.
Volkswagen Targets Higher Volumes
Volkswagen has made it clear that the new SUV is intended to generate scale and volumes in India. The sub-4m SUV segment includes some of the country’s highest-selling models, including Tata Nexon, Maruti Brezza, Hyundai Venue, Kia Sonet, Mahindra XUV 3XO, etc.
For Volkswagen, which currently relies primarily on Virtus and Taigun for volumes, an entry into this segment could significantly expand its addressable customer base. Skoda has already demonstrated the volume potential of this strategy with Kylaq. In July 2026, Kylaq registered sales of 3,727 units and accounted for around 65% of Skoda India’s total domestic sales of 5,709 units.
Could Volkswagen SUV Eat Into Kylaq Sales?
However, the timing also raises an interesting question for Skoda Volkswagen India. After an initial period of strong growth, Kylaq sales have started showing signs of stagnation. Kylaq registered 27,720 units during January-July 2026, compared to 27,091 units during the corresponding period last year. This represents growth of only 2.32%. And if we consider last 6 month period from Feb-Jul, sales of Kylaq declined by 5%.
Adding a Volkswagen alternative could work in two ways. It could expand the Group’s overall share by attracting buyers who prefer Volkswagen’s styling and brand identity but currently don’t have a sub-4m option. On the other hand, considering the two SUVs will share their platform and are likely to have similar powertrains and positioning, some cannibalisation of Kylaq sales cannot be ruled out.
Pricing and product differentiation will therefore be important. Volkswagen will have to give its upcoming SUV enough of an individual identity while ensuring it doesn’t simply shift buyers from one Skoda Volkswagen India product to another.
