New Renault Duster Hybrid Launch

Renault Duster gets a strong-hybrid option, combining a 1.8-litre petrol engine with two electric motors and a claimed fuel efficiency of 29 km/l

Renault has launched the Duster strong hybrid E-Tech 160 in India, expanding the SUV’s existing turbo-petrol lineup. With an ARAI-certified fuel efficiency of 29 km/l and a combined system output of 160 PS, the hybrid targets buyers looking for lower fuel consumption alongside stronger performance. It takes on the strong-hybrid versions of Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, Victoris and Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder.

Bookings opened on October 9 for Rs 21,000 through Renault India’s website and authorised dealerships. Duster hybrid also marks the introduction of Renault’s E-Tech technology in India under its futuREady roadmap.

Renault Duster Hybrid Prices And Variants

Duster Hybrid is offered in 3 trims – Evolution, Techno and Emotion. Evolution Hybrid is priced at Rs 16.99 lakh, Techno at Rs 18.99 lakh and Emotion at Rs 19.49 lakh (all prices Ex-sh). Duster Hybrid is equipped with illuminated grille and frequency dependent dampers, making it better kitted out than non-Hybrid Duster. Two new interior themes have been added, featuring Dune Brown theme with lighter pillars. There is 7-year warranty along with 8-year or 160k km battery warranty. Also, Renault Protect 360 with 3-year insurance, maintanance coverage and assured buyback for Rs 89,900.

29 Kmpl Certified Mileage

Fuel efficiency is one of the Duster hybrid’s biggest talking points. Its ARAI-certified figure of 29 km/l is higher than the 27.97 km/l quoted for the Grand Vitara and Hyryder strong hybrids, as well as the Victoris hybrid’s 28.65 km/l. This results in a promised max range of 1,400 km on one refill and Renault claims up to 80% city drive in pure electric with its larger 1.4 kWh battery pack.

The advantage is more substantial when compared with the Duster’s own turbo-petrol options. The 1.0-litre turbo-petrol manual delivers a claimed 19.41 km/l, while the 1.3-litre turbo-petrol returns 17.75 km/l with the manual and 18.45 km/l with the dual-clutch automatic. Actual fuel efficiency will depend on traffic, driving style and operating conditions.

For buyers who associated the original Duster with its diesel engine, the hybrid offers a new efficiency-focused option. Renault is positioning it as an alternative for customers seeking a balance between performance and running costs, without the need for external charging.

1.8-Litre Petrol Engine, Two Electric Motors

Duster E-Tech 160 combines segment’s largest 1.8-litre Atkinson Cycle petrol engine with 350 bar direct injection, two electric motors and a 1.4 kWh battery. Together, the system delivers 160 PS, with an intelligent multi-mode automatic transmission managing power delivery. Motor alone, is rated at 208 Nm.

The two electric motors perform different functions, supporting propulsion and the operation of the hybrid system. Depending on driving conditions and battery charge, the SUV can run on electric power, use its petrol engine or combine both sources. The battery is directly cooled by the refrigerant and not by air or water.

Renault’s multi-mode transmission also differs from the e-CVT arrangement used by its Maruti Suzuki and Toyota hybrid rivals. It uses eight fixed gear ratios along with dog clutch, with the system selecting the appropriate operating mode to balance performance and efficiency. Claimed 0-100 km/h sprint is just 9.6 seconds.

Renault claims the system can cover up to 80% of city driving in electric mode under suitable conditions. This does not mean the SUV offers a long standalone electric range. Instead, it switches between electric and petrol operation throughout a journey, with the engine coming into use as required.

Can Hybrid Give Duster Sales A Lift?

The hybrid arrives at an important time for the Duster. Sales stood at 465 units in September 2026, compared with 402 units in August and 512 units in July. Its July–September total was 1,379 units, while cumulative sales for January–September stood at 7,418 units.

Adding a strong-hybrid powertrain broadens the Duster’s appeal beyond its existing turbo-petrol options. Its 160 PS output and 29 km/l certified efficiency give Renault two clear selling points against established hybrid rivals.
