The Penguin,” HBO’s limited series set on the gritty streets of Gotham as Oz Cobb (Colin Farrell) climbs through the ranks of the criminal underworld in the power vacuum left after the end of Matt Reeves’s “The Batman” film, led all Emmys craft categories July 15 with 24 total nominations and 17 in craft categories. Next was “Severance” (Apple TV+) with 14 craft nominations from its total of 27. Then “The White Lotus” (HBO) with 12. The series with double-digit craft nominations was rounded out by “The Studio” (Apple TV+), with 10 craft-focused nominations out of its total haul of 23, the most for any freshman comedy series.

After that, nominations were spread out among Emmy hopefuls: “Andor” (Disney+) and “The Last of Us” (HBO) each received nine; “Black Mirror,” (Netflix), “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story” (Netflix), and “Hacks” (HBO) all received seven; “House of the Dragon” (HBO) and “The Righteous Gemstones” (HBO) both gained six craft nominations; “Adolescence” (Netflix), “Only Murders in the Building” (Hulu), and “The Pitt” (HBO) each received five; then “The Bear” (FX), “Bridgerton” (Netflix), “Dune: Prophecy” (HBO), and “What We Do In The Shadows” (FX) all gained four craft nominations; and “Agatha All Along” (Disney+), “The Boys” (Prime Video), “Dying For Sex” (FX), “Emiliy In Paris” (Netflix), and “Mid-Century Modern” (Hulu) received three craft nominations each.

While most shows expected to compete for Emmys this year walked away with at least one nomination — the huge exception being “Squid Game” Season 2, which was completely shut out for its second round — some prestige-hunting series like “Disclaimer,” “Etoile,” “Pachinko,” and “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” only earned one or two craft nominations. Meanwhile, “Star Wars” fans not content with “Andor’s” nominations can also delight in a stray outstanding sound editing nomination for the team behind “The Acolyte,” and Boccaccio stans can rejoice that the opening title sequence for Netflix’s adaptation of “The Decameron” has been nominated for its many, many rats.

“The Penguin” has hustled itself into a position of power in the craft categories in terms of sheer nomination numbers. But it has several fights on its hands still to come, nominated against drama juggernauts in Outstanding Production Design for a Narrative Contemporary Program, and against strong contenders “Adolescence” and “Dying For Sex” in Casting, Cinematography, Costume, and Music Composition. “The Penguin” is also competing against itself three times over for Picture Editing (“Bliss,” “Cent’anni” and “A Great Or Little Thing”), but seems sure to have the muscle to win out where it is nominated for Contemporary Hairstyling and Contemporary Makeup (Prosthetic), with decent chances in the Limited Or Anthology Series Sound Editing and Sound Mixing categories as well.

“Severance,” meanwhile, still seems to have the mysterious and important work/life balance to beat in the drama-focused craft categories. Its main competition will be “The White Lotus” and “The Last of Us,” in terms of Production Design, Casting, and Music Composition. The Apple TV+ also locked in three Picture Editing nominations for Joseph Landauer, Keith Fraase, and Geoffrey Richman — and if “Severance” does not receive an Outstanding Choreography recognition for the “Choreography & Merriment” of the completion of Cold Harbor, the Milchick stans will riot. The show is also nominated for Outstanding Title Design, Outstanding Sound Editing, Outstanding Sound Mixing, and Outstanding Music Supervision.

“The Studio” has made its presence felt in the comedy-focused craft categories, with a studio-budget-sized number of nominations, freezing out both “The Bear” and “Hacks” from more dominant performances for those series’ third and fourth seasons. Novelty may indeed win the day when it comes to “The Studio’s” nominations for the show’s surgical strike casting, on-point music supervision, rich production design — not to mention all of DP Adam Newport-Berra’s oners, which do not have to compete against “Adolescence,” so the way seems clear in Outstanding Cinematography for a Half-Hour Series. The Apple TV+ series is also nominated for Contemporary Costumes, Picture Editing, Contemporary Hairstyling, Music Composition, Sound Editing, and Sound Mixing.

While low craft nomination totals for ongoing shows like “House of the Dragon” and “Only Murders in the Building” may not count them out for good, there are several series for which the 2025 awards will be their last shot at Emmy gold. The large haul of nominations for “Andor” likely speaks to an awareness that the “Rogue One” prequel series was under-recognized for the outstanding work in its first season, and this second set of twelve episodes is the only other shot the Television Academy will have to join “Andor’s” Rebellion.

Likewise, outstanding comedy stalwarts “The Righteous Gemstones” and “What We Do In The Shadows” are being recognized with nominations for the final time. It remains to be seen whether the wildly ambitious Civil War “Prequel” that opens “Righteous Gemstones” Season 4 will be enough of a big swing to force some trophy donations to the Gemstone family. The nominations for production design, hairstyling, period or fantasy/sci-fi makeup, and editing for “What We Do In The Shadows” already feel a bit like a farewell present to the Vampires of Staten Island, but any one of these categories — especially Shayne Fox’s tremendous production design for the show — could end up being a sentimental choice.

The show that perhaps speaks most of Emmys to come is “The Pitt,” with HBO’s medical drama shot in continuous time earning a solid five craft nominations out of its total of 13 Emmy nominations, including both prosthetic and non-prosthetic Contemporary Makeup. It will be really interesting if the grounded, unrelenting nature of “The Pitt” beats out series that require more transportive lifts to heightened realities like those on display in “Andor,” “The Last of Us,” and “Severance.”

Meanwhile, the nominees for animation were “Arcane” (Netflix), “Bob’s Burgers” (Fox), “Common Side Effects” (Adult Swim), “Love, Death, + Robots” (Netflix), and “The Simpsons” (Fox). The Fox shows are perennial favorites, of course, but “Arcane” has a decent shot of taking an Emmy back to France for studio Fortiche’s and Riot Games’ for its final trick in the world of “League of Legends.”
