Hannah Einbinder Wins Emmy for 2025 Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series
This is her first win for the role of Ava Daniels on "Hacks" after four straight nominations.
by Brian Welk · IndieWireHannah Einbinder has won the Emmy for 2025 Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for her work on the HBO comedy “Hacks” for the show’s fourth season. Einbinder has been nominated for the role of Ava Daniels for four years straight but had never won for her performance. This is her first Emmy win.
Einbinder won in a field that also included some other former winners. The other nominees were last year’s winner Liza Colón-Zayas for “The Bear,” Kathryn Hahn for “The Studio,” Janelle James for “Abbott Elementary,” Catherine O’Hara for “The Studio,” Sheryl Lee Ralph for “Abbott Elementary,” and Jessica Williams for “Shrinking.”
Einbinder on stage was visibly shocked at her victory, saying she was committed to her personal narrative that she would continue to lose, but hey, winning is still cool and even “punk rock.” She thanked creators Lucia Aniello, Paul W. Downs, and Jen Statsky for “being my friends and family,” and said her co-star Jean Smart is “like the sun.”
As her speech ran on long, a countdown clock continued ticking as part of the Emmys’ running joke that Nate Bargatze’s donation would deplete the longer people spoke over their time limit. But she left time for one of the first bleeps of the night when she said, “Go Birds, Fuck ICE, and Free Palestine.”
“Hacks” in its fourth season was nominated for 14 Emmys and already picked up a win at the Creative Arts Emmys for Julianne Nicholson’s performance as Dance Mom for Outstanding Guest Actress. “Hacks” last year won the Emmy for Best Comedy, and Jean Smart kept her winning streak alive for Best Actress. “Hacks” is again nominated for Best Comedy.
This season of “Hacks” saw Ava serving as head writer for Deborah Vance’s new late night show as they fight to establish themselves and turn the show into a hit in a short period of time, all while making some compromises to her standards for comedy. Einbinder was on point being as combative as ever with Smart, and one of her standout moments in the show saw her chucking an $80 branzino fish at the window upon realizing her writing staff’s absurd spending habits for lunch.
Einbinder broke news earlier in the evening when she said on the red carpet that “Hacks” would be ending with its fifth season, which begins filming next week.
“I think it will feel different,” Einbinder told E! host Heather McMahan. “We’re going to start next week, and knowing it’s the last season is really bittersweet. But I think it’s right, you know? I think it’s nice to do something as many times as it should be done. Not overstay your welcome. Rip it and do it and laugh and cry.”
Einbinder’s win comes at a time when the actress and comedian is moving up in the world. She had an acclaimed — and beautifully lensed — stand-up special also on HBO last year titled “Hannah Einbinder: Everything Must Go, and in May we reported that Einbinder would be joining the cast of “I Saw the TV Glow” director Jane Schoenbrun’s next feature alongside Gillian Anderson, a film called “Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma,” which is set up at MUBI. She also earlier this year won the Critics Choice Award for Best Supporting Actress and was nominated for a Golden Globe.
