After three decades as a primetime TV fixture, “The Pitt” star Noah Wyle finally won his first Emmy, for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series, at the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday, September 14.

The win comes 30 years after his first Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for playing Dr. John Carter on the NBC staple “E.R.” Wyle would be nominated four more years in a row for his breakout role on the hit medical drama that he starred on for 254 episodes across 13 seasons.

Though it is not an “E.R.” spinoff, and is formatted very differently (each episode is one hour of the workday a la “24”), HBO Max series “The Pitt,” about the daily lives of healthcare professionals during at particularly busy day at their Pittsburgh hospital, has been widely seen as the spiritual successor to Emmy-winning drama series “E.R.”, especially with Wyle both at the lead as Dr. Michael “Robby” Robinavitch, and as an executive producer who wrote the Season 1 episodes “10:00 a.m.” and “3:00 p.m.”

In fact, Wyle is also listed among “The Pitt” producers nominated for Outstanding Drama Series, one of the 13 Emmy nominations the show received, also including recognition for sound editing, sound mixing, contemporary makeup, prosthetic makeup. The series also went into the Primetime Emmys with two nominations each in the Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series and Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series categories, a nod to Wyle’s co-star Katherine LaNasa for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series, and two wins at the Creative Arts Emmys for Outstanding Casting for a Drama Series and Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series for Shawn Hatosy.

Joining Wyle in the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series were “Paradise” star Sterling K. Brown, “Slow Horses” star Gary Oldman, “The Last of Us” star Pedro Pascal, and “Severance” star Adam Scott.

Season 2 of “The Pitt” is already in production, with the latest 15-hour shift at the Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center taking place on Independence Day.
