Costume Designers Awards Honor ‘One Battle After Another’ and ‘Frankenstein’
"The Studio," "Palm Royale," and "Andor" were the television series honored with CDGA awards at the 28th ceremony.
by Sarah Shachat · IndieWireThe Costume Designers Guild held their 28th awards ceremony at The Ebell of Los Angeles earlier this evening. The only award ceremony to feature a statue with a cooler nickname than the Oscars — winners take home “The Adrian” — the CDGA celebrated special honorees Michelle Cole, James Cameron, Kate Hudson, and Teyana Taylor, as well as the winners of the nine competitive award categories.
The film categories — contemporary, period, and sci-fi/fantasy — were won by “One Battle After Another,” “Frankenstein,” and “Wicked: For Good,” respectively. The former two are also nominated for Best Costume Design at the Academy Awards, and so either Colleen Atwood or Kate Hawley may add to their golden hardware collection. Those hoping for a “Sinners” sweep, however, can take some news from the CDGAs. “Sinners” did win the award for excellence in costume illustration.
On the television side, however, the winning series for excellence in period, sci-fi/fantasy, and contemporary costumes were all old hands. “Palm Royale,” “Andor,” and “The Studio” have either concluded or won’t be back in awards conversation for at least another Emmy season.
Kate Hudson received the Spotlight Award, which honors an actor whose talent and career personify an enduring commitment to excellence, including a special awareness of the role and importance of Costume Design. Michelle Cole accepted the Career Achievement Award, which recognizes an individual whose career in costume design has left an indelible mark on film and television.
The evening’s Distinguished Collaborator Award was presented to James Cameron by Deborah L. Scott. The award is a special honor that recognizes individuals whose exceptional skills and contributions have significantly advanced the craft and art of costume design. Jodie Turner-Smith presented Teyana Taylor with the Vanguard Spotlight Award, which celebrates a trailblazer who ignites the imaginations of cognoscenti and audiences alike.
