Karnataka Bans Ola, Uber, Rapido Bike Taxi Service!

The government of Karnataka is known for taking wild decisions when it comes to public affairs. They have pulled off something of this sort again by imposing a ban on bike taxi services in the state. 

Back in 2021, the Congress government in Karnataka banned bike taxi services offered by companies like Ola, Uber, and Rapido. However, this company is good approach the Karnataka High Court and got momentary relief. The court had instructed the state government, not to take any legal action against these services till further notice. 

Incidentally, this case came to a hearing in the Karnataka High Court today and Justice BM Shyam Prasad adjudicated that these bike taxi services must cease operations. It has been communicated that all these commuting companies must shut down their operations in six weeks time.

The High Court has banned bike taxi services like Ola, Uber, and Rapido until the state formulates proper regulations and the government has three months to frame rules, while operators have a six-week grace period to stop services. 

The state government argued that these services lacked legal approval, and there are a lot of human complications associated with the same. The ruling impacts gig workers and daily commuters relying on bike taxis for affordable transport. Other states have varying policies, such as Delhi allowing only electric bike taxis.

There are reports that these commuting services might approach the court for a more favorable judgment and challenge the ruling made by the the high court.
