Actors yearn for coveted awards as a mark of recognition for their contribution to the world of cinema. Unfortunately, not every deserving actor is rewarded. Renowned Hollywood actor Tom Cruise is one among those globally famed artists who did not land the prestigious Oscar award despite his death defying stunts and impeccable performances in his illustrious career.

As a consolation, Tom Cruise has now received an honorary Oscar at the Governors Awards on Sunday at the Ray Dolby Ballroom in Ovation Hollywood, Los Angeles. Besides Tom Cruise, other influential figures like Dolly Parton, Debbie Allen and Wynn Thomas were also recognised by the academy’s board of governors to recognise extraordinary distinction in lifetime achievement in the film industry and outstanding contributions to the state of filmmaking.

Tom Cruise was first nominated for Oscars in 1990 for his portrayal as Ron Kovic in biographical film Born on the Fourth of July in  best actor category. He later received nominations for Jerry Maguire and Magnolia. As a producer, he was in race for best motion picture in 2023 with Top Gun. Unfortunately, the black lady remained elusive all these for this celebrated actor who is popular across the globe for his iconic roles and mind blowing action sequences.

The actor accepted the Academy Honorary Award and said “The cinema takes me around the world. It helps me to appreciate and respect differences. It also shows me our shared humanity, how alike we are in so many ways. And no matter where we come from, in that theatre, we laugh together, we feel together, we hope together, and that is the power of this art form. And that is why it matters, that is why it matters to me. So making films is not what I do, it is who I am.”
